Feel free to check in over the course of the year to see how I’m doing in making this stuff happen.
Love God. Love People.
Last year really tested my faith. I hit some really dark spots and had some real highs. I look forward to listening to God’s word daily and writing out my prayers as I walk this year. Already, I have heard some things in the Bible that have brought hard questions about God’s character. I look forward to struggling with this sort of stuff over the course of the year, and walking through it with other folks.
There are a lot of homeless people in DC. I look forward to spending more time in that community this year.
Invest in Anna Olivia
Watching Anna Olivia grow last year was amazing and I can’t wait to see how she continues her growth this year. Growing up as black woman in this country, Anna Olivia needs to know her intelligence, value add to this society, beauty, and work ethic. I look forward to affirming that in her directly as we work, play, and explore. I look forward to affirming that in her as I affirm her mother as well.
As her English vocabulary has grown, the limits of my French vocabulary have become more glaring. I will be practicing on DuoLingo daily and plugging into a French-speaking meetup. Anna Olivia is at the point where she understands pretty much everything I say in French, and says a few words herself. I would love for us to get to the point where we have small conversations in French this year.
I want Anna Olivia to see Ghana and her godmother in London before she goes back to school next fall.
Anna Olivia is so cute when she says amen after we pray. I want us to develop prayer as a regular routine for her. She is great at reminding me to brush her teeth. I look forward to her doing the same for our prayer time together.
I made progress on styling Anna Olivia’s hair last year, and would like to learn how to braid her hair. She’s quite stylish and I can’t be the one cramping her chic.
Invest in Family
I have some incredibly talented siblings, and I look forward to supporting their growth with my resources and ideas. Delali is going to high school this year, so my focus is on getting as big as possible to scare off any silly boy who tries to step to her incorrectly. I also want to nurture her interest in being an OB/GYN – sending articles, connecting her with people I meet in that field, etc. Kofi is getting clarity on what he wants to do, and I am excited about him maximizing his ability to teach himself anything. He literally can teach himself to do anything – play piano, sew, code – and I look forward to encouraging him in honing that. Kwadwo is a renaissance man – engineer, musician, photographer, entrepreneur. I look forward to thinking through, with him, how all that comes together, if at all.
I would like to have a few conversations with my parents about their financial position and where they would like to be as they continue in life. My mom retired last year and has been brainstorming a consulting business that would support caregivers of individuals with dementia. She is an expert on this issue and is so passionate about it. I would love to see her continue to change families’ lives through her work in this area.
My dad has been running Pimpong’s Unique Nuts for decades and people still love the original recipe. He’s had some of the same customers for decades, literally. I would love to see the company 10x over the next five years or so, and think establishing it on an e-commerce platform this year would position it for that.
My extended family is global and I would love to be in better touch. I have a few cousins with whom I have touched base with from time to time, and look forward to building on that.
Invest in Friendships
I learned a lot about the blessedness of friendship last year. My closest friend, Peter, walked with me through the toughest year of my life. I hope to be half as good a friend as he is. I learned a lot about areas where I fall short and look forward to investing more in those areas. Visiting folks in their towns. Being there when they need me. Speaking truth always.
Align What I Do at 4AM with What I Do at 8AM
By March 6, 2015, I would like to land a role with a lobbying firm representing African governments and companies with interests on the continent. Let’s go.
For Afara Global, I would like to have helped three cities identify and begin exploring synergies with their sister cities on the continent by the end of the year.
Manage My Money
Last year, I learned a lot of hard lessons about how I have not managed my money. I’m taking a class over the next couple months in which I look forward to developing good disciplines in this area.
I would like to be able to do at least 20 muscle-ups and regain my handstand skills by the end of the year.
As an aside, if you’re looking for a tool to manage your tasks, I use Asana and highly recommend it.
